Most camping-kitchen inquiries begin with three questions:
What is your MOQ?
How much is a sample?
How long will production take?
They sound like separate questions. They are not.
The MOQ changes when the buyer requests a custom color, printed carton, different burner or new table layout. The sample price changes when the sample must be engineered rather than taken from stock. Production lead time changes when the project needs custom components, new tooling, compliance work or multiple rounds of approval.
That is why a supplier can answer all three questions quickly and still give an answer that is commercially useless.
A reliable quotation needs a defined product, a destination market, an order configuration and a clear starting point for the schedule. Without those details, “MOQ 20,” “free sample” or “30-day lead time” may describe a different product from the one the buyer actually intends to sell.
This guide explains how minimum order quantity, sample cost and production lead time work for portable camping kitchens—and how B2B buyers can reduce risk without forcing a project into numbers that the supply chain cannot support.
MOQ is the smallest commercially workable quantity for one approved specification. Sample cost is the cost of producing and delivering the evidence needed for approval. Production lead time is the period required to build the approved order after all agreed starting conditions have been met.
For selected INTECAMP standard stock products, the current published starting MOQ is 20 units, and selected stock configurations may be prepared for shipment in approximately seven working days after order confirmation and receipt of the agreed payment. That stock-item example should not be used as the default for an OEM project. A practical planning pattern is:

The only dependable numbers are the ones attached to a specific SKU, revision, quantity, Incoterm and approval status.
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. It is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept for a particular commercial condition.
The last phrase matters. MOQ is not a permanent property of the product. It can change with:

A quotation for 20 standard units does not prove that 20 custom-colored units are feasible. The assembly quantity may be small while the coating, molded part or carton supplier requires a much larger batch.
Sample cost is not always the mass-production unit price for one piece. It may include one-off labor, engineering, special material purchase, logo setup, packaging prototypes, tooling trials, inspection, documentation and courier freight.
A stock sample and an engineering prototype answer different questions. They should not be expected to cost the same.
Production lead time is the time needed to manufacture and prepare an approved order. It normally does not include every earlier and later stage.

Buyers should ask two questions whenever a supplier states a lead time:
What event starts the clock?
What event stops the clock?
“45 days” can mean 45 days from deposit to ex-factory readiness, 45 days after sample approval, or 45 days to port departure. Those are three different schedules.
Experienced buyers rarely ask only for “the MOQ.” They ask which MOQ applies.
The supplier may provide one or more units for evaluation. This is not a production MOQ. A sample can be taken from stock, assembled separately or fabricated as a prototype.
This applies to an existing configuration that is physically available or supported by current components. It is often the lowest route into a product category because no custom supply chain is being created.
Selected INTECAMP standard products currently publish a trial starting point of approximately 20 units. Availability and the exact model still need written confirmation.
The product is already production-ready but must be scheduled and built. The MOQ reflects line setup, material purchasing, assembly efficiency, inspection and packing.
The physical product may remain standard while the logo, labels, manual, barcode or carton changes. The finished-product MOQ may be modest, but printed packaging can become the controlling quantity.
The buyer changes the configuration, component, material, color, dimensions or functionality. MOQ is then influenced by the smallest viable batch for each custom input and by the engineering effort required to control the revised product.
A factory may agree to assemble 100 kitchens, while a custom extrusion, injection-molded part or powder color requires material for 500. The buyer must decide what happens to the surplus component inventory.
Possible arrangements include:
Buyer purchases all custom components and stores the balance at the factory
Supplier amortizes the extra inventory across an annual forecast
Buyer changes to a standard component
Order quantity increases
Project is postponed until demand is stronger
The quotation should state who owns paid surplus components, how long they will be stored and what happens if the specification changes.
A repeat order can have a different MOQ from the first order. Existing packaging, approved components and retained tooling may reduce setup. On the other hand, a component supplier may have changed its own minimum batch.
Do not assume that the first-order MOQ remains valid indefinitely. Ask how long the commercial terms are open.
A simple folding table has fewer materials and fewer assembly steps than an all-in-one kitchen with storage, wheels, side tables, a sink, locks and an appliance module. More components mean more supplier minimums and more opportunities for one input to control the order quantity.
Standard steel tube, aluminum sheet and common hardware can often be purchased efficiently. A special alloy, thickness, texture or surface process may require a dedicated batch.
Powder coating is a common example. A standard factory color can run with other work. A buyer-specific color may require powder purchase, line cleaning, setup and a minimum coating batch. The product assembly MOQ is no longer the only issue.
A change to a molded storage box, wheel housing, handle or connector can require tooling. Even a color change may have a material-purge quantity and minimum resin batch. If the product uses SMC or another molded composite, the production economics differ from a simple logo application.
Carry bags, cooler inserts, fabric cupboards and protective covers may have their own fabric, coating, zipper, webbing and printing requirements. A custom Pantone color or woven label can create a separate MOQ.
A camping kitchen with a stove-free module can often use a common structural platform. A buyer-specific gas burner, hose, regulator, connector or induction cooker introduces new component sourcing and documentation.
For gas products, pressure, fuel, connection and warning requirements vary by market. For induction products, voltage, frequency, power and plug type matter. A supplier may require a larger batch to source the correct appliance configuration.
An unprinted export carton with a label can support a small trial more easily than a full-color retail carton. Molded foam, printed sleeves, multi-language manuals and display packaging each have setup and minimum-run economics.
Packaging also affects freight. A custom accessory that increases carton width by 30 mm may reduce pallet or container quantity even when its unit cost is small.
A more demanding inspection plan does not always increase MOQ, but it can affect setup, testing fixtures and unit cost. If the project needs destructive tests, extra samples must be allocated. Market-specific testing or technical files can also make a very small order commercially irrational.
A factory may accept a smaller quantity when it can combine the order with the same platform, color or process already scheduled for another run. The same quantity may be difficult during peak season or when the line must be changed only for one short batch.
This is why “Can you reduce the MOQ?” is less effective than “Which custom input is setting the MOQ, and what could we standardize?”
A sample invoice can contain up to seven separate cost groups:
Sample cost = product or prototype + engineering + setup + tooling + packaging proof + testing + freight and import charges
Not every sample includes every group.
A standard stock sample can be selected, inspected and packed. A new prototype may require manual cutting, welding, machining, finishing and assembly outside the normal production line. It can cost several times the expected mass-production unit price because the factory is building one unit without production efficiency.
If drawings, dimensions, load paths or component interfaces must be created or revised, the supplier may charge a development or non-recurring engineering fee. This is different from the physical sample cost.
Logo plates, screen-printing frames, laser programs, color matching, one-off coating, embroidery files and special assembly fixtures all create setup work.
New molds, dies, jigs and gauges should be quoted separately. A tooling payment may produce a prototype, but it is not automatically a refundable sample fee. Ownership, storage and permitted use belong in a tooling agreement.
A digitally printed carton proof can verify artwork, but it may not represent the final offset print, board grade or coating. A production-intent packaging sample may require dielines, printing setup, inserts and physical testing.
The factory may charge for cycle tests, load tests, packaging tests or external laboratory work. A certification sample can be modified, marked or destroyed during testing and should not be treated as the buyer's only reference unit.
Portable kitchens are large relative to their value. Express carriers charge by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. The sample freight can equal or exceed the physical sample charge, particularly when accessories ship in separate cartons.
The supplier should state whether freight is prepaid, collect, included or quoted separately. The buyer should also budget for destination import tax, brokerage and handling.

A project may need more than one. Using the first hand-built prototype as the golden sample is risky because prototype materials and fabrication methods may differ from mass production.
There is no universal rule.
Some suppliers credit a standard sample charge against a later order. Others credit only part of the sample cost after a specified order value. Engineering, tooling, courier freight, duties and external testing are usually treated separately.
If a supplier says the sample fee is refundable, ask for the conditions in writing:
What amount is credited?
Which purchase order triggers the credit?
Is there a minimum order value?
Is there a deadline?
Does the credit apply to product only or also customization?
Are freight, tooling and testing excluded?
Is the amount deducted from the deposit or final balance?
“Refundable after order” is not precise enough for a purchase agreement.
A heavy, functional camping kitchen is not a promotional swatch. It contains sellable materials, assembly time, inspection and substantial freight. Charging for it can be reasonable.
The better question is whether the sample process removes enough uncertainty to justify its cost. A correctly selected, inspected and documented sample can prevent an unsuitable container order. That is a much larger saving than receiving one nominally free unit.
This begins after the supplier has enough information to work and ends when the required samples, tests and specifications are approved.

The clock should start only when the last required item is complete. Otherwise, the schedule appears to be running while the factory is still waiting for buyer information.
This starts after goods are ready and includes booking, origin handling, transport, destination clearance and delivery to the warehouse.
Production completion is not warehouse arrival. An ex-factory date, estimated port departure and estimated arrival date should be shown separately.
The ranges below are for initial planning only. The approved project quotation takes priority.

These are not promises and should not be copied into a customer contract. A simple project can move faster; a gas, electrical, vehicle-integrated or newly molded product can take longer. Holidays, peak season, material shortages and delayed buyer decisions also affect the calendar.
A supplier may genuinely need 30 days for assembly and packing. The buyer can still miss the launch because the complete path looks like this:

The time spent waiting for a barcode, translated warning or final carton artwork is not factory production time, but it is still launch time.
The most useful date in a seasonal purchase plan is not the requested factory completion date. It is the latest acceptable warehouse receipt date.

For a new spring camping range, an OEM project should normally begin months before the factory booking date. Waiting until the buyer “needs production” leaves no room for sampling, revision or test failure.
Not every stage needs the same buffer.
A few days of delay in artwork approval may be recoverable. A failed structural test, unavailable custom appliance or missed ocean sailing can move the entire order. Place time contingency around the steps with the highest consequence, not evenly across the calendar.
A kitchen supplied without a fixed cooking appliance can be easier to standardize across markets. The buyer may pair it with a locally approved stove, induction unit, grill or worktop. This can reduce appliance-specific MOQ and documentation complexity.

Fuel type, pressure, regulator, hose and connector must be confirmed. Substituting a burner or connection after sample approval can affect the BOM, documents, instructions and production schedule.
Voltage, frequency, plug type, rated power, cooling and intended power source must be defined. A North American SKU and a European SKU may share the mechanical base while requiring separate electrical components, labels, manuals and testing review.
A water pump adds battery, charging, transport-document and spare-part questions. If the exact pump changes because of availability, the buyer should review both fit and documentation before production continues.
The fastest path is often not to remove approval gates, but to use a stable modular platform and limit the number of market-specific components.
A custom coating or molded color can set the entire MOQ. A standard finish with branded labels and packaging may be a better category test.
Gas, induction, barbecue and stove-free versions can sometimes share the same storage base, table system and hardware. Common components improve purchasing efficiency even when final SKUs differ.
Ask whether the factory can aggregate the common-platform quantity while maintaining separate appliance or packaging minimums. Do not assume mixed-SKU quantities are automatically combined.
A plain export carton with a professionally designed product label or printed sleeve can support a smaller launch. Move to a full-color carton after the sales forecast becomes more reliable.
A common instruction manual plus a controlled language or warning insert may reduce obsolete inventory when several small markets are served. Confirm that the final format still meets all applicable language and safety requirements.
Some suppliers can accept a smaller batch if the buyer pays color setup, printing plates, engineering or line-change costs separately. This raises the first-order unit economics but can reduce inventory exposure.
A smaller standard-color order may fit alongside another production run. The trade-off is less control over the exact schedule. This works for planned replenishment, not for a fixed retail launch with no buffer.
If one component has a high MOQ, the buyer may fund the full batch and consume it across several finished-product orders. Inventory ownership, storage period, loss, obsolescence and specification changes must be agreed in writing.
The first SKU does not need every feature. A platform without a fixed appliance can validate demand while the brand develops market-specific cooking modules later.
Provide destination market, channel, quantity, target date, configuration, appliance strategy, branding, packaging and documentation requirements at the beginning. A detailed inquiry saves more time than an “urgent” subject line.
The supplier should know who can approve dimensions, color, cost trade-offs and sample changes. Contradictory feedback from sales, engineering and marketing is a common source of resampling.
Late additions are rarely free. A paper-towel holder, larger wheel or different worktop may require new packaging, drawings and tests even if it appears minor.
Artwork can progress while the functional sample is being reviewed, provided dimensions and claims are not yet locked into print. Do not print cartons before the final product envelope and included accessories are confirmed.
A current hinge, latch, wheel, basin or modular interface has known cost and availability. A new component may create a separate sourcing and validation cycle.
For seasonal programs, discuss production slots before final sample approval and confirm what financial commitment is needed to reserve them. A forecast alone may not hold capacity.
Use a change log with owner and deadline. If the supplier sends a drawing on Monday and the buyer approves it two weeks later, those two weeks belong in the project schedule.
Replacing a delayed component without review may protect the shipment date and damage the product. Any material or supplier change should follow the agreed change-control process.
A sample should be tested as a system, not displayed in a meeting room for ten minutes.

The sample report should end with one of three decisions: approved, approved with listed corrections, or rejected. “Looks good” is not a production release.
A physical golden sample is valuable, but it cannot record everything. It may not reveal material grade, coating thickness, fastener torque, supplier name, load-test method or packaging board strength.
The production reference should therefore include:

One copy may remain with the buyer and one sealed copy with the factory. If the sample is too large to retain in duplicate, use a detailed signed inspection record and controlled high-resolution photographs.
Create one comparison sheet and normalize the commercial assumptions.

If one supplier quotes an unchanged stock product and another includes a custom burner, printed carton and external test work, comparing only unit price produces the wrong conclusion.
The number may apply only to the supplier's preferred standard version. Ask what changes would trigger a new MOQ.
Clarify payment, freight, ownership and whether the sample must be returned. A free product with expensive freight and unclear conditions is not necessarily free.
The credit amount and qualifying order should appear in the quotation or sample agreement.
“30 days” should state whether the clock begins after deposit, after artwork, after sample approval or after materials arrive.
Ask separately for ready-to-ship date, estimated departure, estimated transit and destination delivery.
Prototype substitutions may be necessary, but they must be identified. Do not approve mass production from a sample that hides the differences.
Schedule recovery should never permit the supplier to change a critical component without written approval.
This can create carton-size changes, missing protection, delayed printing and lower loading quantity.
A small opening order does not help if a broken wheel, latch, basin or pump requires replacing the whole product. Include service parts in the first commercial plan.
Instead of saying “Your MOQ is too high,” show the supplier the commercial problem.
For example:
We are launching this category in two channels and can support an opening order of 80 units. Our annual forecast is 300–500 units after validation. Please identify which custom requirements are creating the 200-unit MOQ and quote three routes: standard color with branded labels, standard product with custom packaging, and the full custom specification. Show any setup or surplus-component cost separately.
This gives the supplier room to redesign the commercial structure without pretending that the cost disappears.
Buyers can also request quantity tiers, such as:

The best tier may not have the lowest unit price. It should have the strongest balance of cash exposure, freight efficiency and sales confidence.
MOQ and lead time also determine how much safety stock a brand needs.
A simple planning formula is:

If a product sells 20 units per week and the complete replenishment path is 12 weeks, the pipeline demand is already 240 units before safety stock. A 20-unit trial MOQ does not mean a 20-unit reorder is commercially sensible once the product gains traction.
Accessory and spare-part lead times also need separate planning. A main kitchen may be available while a custom bag or burner is delayed.

MOQ, sample cost and lead time are not obstacles placed between a buyer and a factory. They are signals showing where the supply chain carries cost and risk.
A low MOQ is valuable when it reduces inventory exposure without creating poor packaging, unstable components or an uneconomic product. A paid sample is valuable when it prevents a bad order. A short lead time is valuable only when the product, documentation and quality plan remain intact.
For the first inquiry, ask for the current standard-product terms. For the serious quotation, define the exact SKU. For the purchase order, freeze the specification, sample, packaging, starting event and shipment event.
The goal is not to obtain the smallest number in each column. It is to build an order plan that the supplier can reproduce and the buyer can sell profitably.
