Ask three suppliers what “OEM” means and you may receive four answers.

One factory uses the term for an existing product with a different logo. Another reserves it for products made from a buyer's drawings. A third calls any change to an existing design “ODM.” The loose language seems harmless until the buyer and supplier disagree about development fees, tooling ownership, test reports, exclusivity or who approved a structural change.

For a portable camping kitchen, those disagreements can become expensive. The product may combine a load-bearing frame, folding tables, storage, wheels, locks, a sink, water components and either a gas or electrical cooking appliance. A small change to the layout can alter stability. A new stove can change the compliance route. A thicker worktop can increase carton weight. A different hinge can affect both setup and warranty claims.

The right sourcing model is therefore not the one that sounds most advanced. It is the one that gives your brand enough differentiation and control without asking the business to carry more development cost, inventory and technical responsibility than the sales opportunity can support.

The Short Answer

Choose private label when speed and demand validation matter more than product exclusivity. Choose OEM when you know what should change and want to build a differentiated version on a proven manufacturing base. Choose ODM when the project needs new engineering, new product architecture or supplier-led development.

For many outdoor brands, the most sensible path is sequential rather than permanent:

  1. Launch a private-label or lightly customized product to test the category.

  2. Use customer feedback to define an OEM version.

  3. Move into ODM only when sales volume and brand strategy justify a new platform.

That approach may look less dramatic than starting with a blank sheet, but it protects working capital and gives the development team real evidence instead of assumptions.

This table is a useful starting point, not a contract definition. Some projects sit between the columns. A standard storage base with a new cooking module, custom work height and exclusive accessory bundle may be described as OEM, semi-custom ODM or joint development depending on the supplier. The name matters far less than the written scope.

First Rule: Define the Work, Not the Acronym

A sourcing agreement should state what is being changed, who creates each deliverable and who owns the result. “OEM service included” is not enough.

Before discussing the label, answer six questions:

  • Is the physical product already in production?

  • Who owns or controls the drawings and specifications?

  • Who will perform the engineering work?

  • Will new tooling, molds, fixtures or test equipment be required?

  • Can the supplier sell the same construction to other customers?

  • Which party is responsible for market-specific testing, technical files and product labels?

Once these points are clear, the correct commercial structure normally becomes obvious.

For the purpose of this guide, the three models are defined as follows.

Private Label

The buyer selects an existing product and sells it under its own brand. Changes are normally limited to the logo, label, manual, barcode, packaging, color from an available palette or an accessory bundle. The core construction remains the supplier's established product.

OEM

The buyer controls the product requirements or design direction, while the supplier manufactures the product and completes the engineering needed for reliable production. The project may start from the buyer's drawings or from a supplier platform that is modified to a buyer-approved specification.

ODM

The buyer provides a market brief, performance targets and commercial requirements. The supplier contributes a substantial part of the product design and engineering, then manufactures the result. Ownership, reuse rights and exclusivity must be negotiated; they should never be assumed from the term ODM.

When Private Label Is the Right Decision

Private label is sometimes dismissed as the least sophisticated model. In practice, it is often the most disciplined way to enter a new category.

An outdoor retailer may know that its customers are asking for better camp-kitchen organization but still lack evidence about preferred work height, storage capacity, fuel type or acceptable retail price. Developing a completely new product before answering those questions turns the first production order into a large and expensive market survey.

An existing portable kitchen lets the buyer test the commercial fundamentals:

  • Does the category convert online and in stores?

  • Which product demonstrations produce the strongest response?

  • Do customers value integrated storage, a sink, a stove platform or a smaller packed size?

  • How many buyers add accessories?

  • What are the most common returns and warranty questions?

  • Does the target customer prefer seated social cooking or a conventional standing worktop?

The answers can then guide a more focused OEM program.

What Can Usually Be Customized in a Private-Label Program?

Depending on the product and order quantity, a private-label package may include:

  • Brand logo on the product

  • Product and carton labels

  • Retail barcode and SKU information

  • Color selected from an existing finish range

  • Printed instruction manual

  • Market-language warning labels

  • Branded carton or color sleeve

  • Accessory combination

  • Spare-parts package

  • Product photography or packaging artwork supplied by the buyer

The important distinction is that branding does not normally change the load path, dimensions, deployment mechanism or appliance interface.

Advantages of Private Label

Private label has fewer engineering gates, so sampling and production approval are usually more straightforward. The supplier may already have established work instructions, fixtures, packaging and component sources. That can support a smaller trial order than a custom build, although no MOQ should be assumed until the exact branding and packaging have been reviewed.

It is also easier to compare suppliers because the buyer is evaluating a real product rather than a concept. A sample can be opened, loaded, transported, cleaned and repacked before the purchase decision.

Where Private Label Becomes Limiting

The same production-ready foundation that reduces risk also limits exclusivity. Unless the contract says otherwise, another brand may buy a similar construction. A different logo and carton rarely create a durable product advantage.

Private label can also create a weak assortment if the buyer selects isolated catalog items without a product-range plan. A camping kitchen, storage box, side table and water module may look compatible in photographs yet use different colors, fittings or packed dimensions. Retail customers notice when a “collection” behaves like four unrelated products.

Private label is strongest when the commercial story is deliberate: a defined target user, a clear bundle, useful instructions, credible product claims, local after-sales support and a route toward future differentiation.

When OEM Is the Better Fit

OEM is usually the middle ground between catalog purchasing and full product creation. It suits a buyer who has enough market knowledge to specify meaningful changes but wants to build on a proven manufacturing platform.

For portable camping kitchens, OEM work might include:

  • Changing the work height or deployed footprint

  • Revising the storage layout

  • Selecting a gas, induction, barbecue or stove-free module strategy

  • Adding or removing a sink or water-system component

  • Developing a different side-table arrangement

  • Changing the wheel, pull handle, latch or travel lock

  • Reinforcing a worktop or appliance support

  • Revising the modular opening for an approved accessory format

  • Changing materials or surface finish

  • Developing a market-specific accessory bundle

  • Reducing packed volume for pallet and container efficiency

  • Creating a new retail carton, manual and spare-parts plan

The project does not need to change everything. In fact, a good OEM brief is selective. It preserves the parts of a platform that have already proved reliable and changes only what creates customer value or solves a channel problem.

OEM Works Best When the Buyer Has a Product Owner

A factory can manufacture a clear brief. It cannot replace the buyer's understanding of the target customer.

Someone on the buyer's team must be able to decide whether a proposed feature is essential, optional or unnecessary. That person should understand the sales channel, expected retail price, warranty tolerance, packaging constraints and launch date. Without a product owner, an OEM project can drift through repeated samples because each department gives the supplier a different answer.

A mood board is not a specification. Reference photographs can explain intent, but the working brief also needs measurable requirements: packed size, operating height, storage volume, target product weight, working loads, appliance envelope, material preferences, required warnings, test plan and included accessories.

The Main OEM Risk: Customizing Before Priorities Are Frozen

Every change has a chain reaction. Moving the stove platform may change the center of gravity. Adding a larger basin may reduce internal storage. A premium aluminum worktop may increase cost and affect thermal behavior. A new wheel can change the folded envelope and carton. A unique powder color may create a larger component MOQ than the finished-product order.

For that reason, the buyer should freeze the commercial priorities before approving detailed engineering. A useful brief separates requirements into three groups:

  • Must have: The product cannot launch without these items.

  • Should have: Important, but negotiable if cost or timing becomes unacceptable.

  • Could have: Useful ideas for a later version or accessory.

This simple discipline prevents the first OEM model from becoming overloaded, expensive and difficult to explain at retail.

When ODM Is Worth the Investment

ODM is appropriate when an existing product cannot deliver the intended customer experience without substantial redesign.

Examples may include:

  • A new outward-folding or nested deployment system

  • A vehicle-specific slide-out kitchen for an SUV, 4x4 or camper trailer

  • A new low-height layout designed around seated group cooking

  • A modular base intended to support several future cooking and washing products

  • A mechanism that must carry loads in both transport and operating positions

  • A new molded housing, extrusion system or custom storage architecture

  • A new interface between water, electrical and structural components

Here, the supplier's engineering team does more than make drawings production-ready. It helps convert a commercial problem into a workable product.

ODM Does Not Mean “Hand the Factory an Idea and Wait”

The buyer still owns several critical decisions:

  • Who is the target user?

  • Which problem is important enough to solve?

  • What retail price can the channel support?

  • What annual volume makes the development rational?

  • Which markets will receive the product?

  • Which product claims are essential?

  • What level of service and spare parts will the brand provide?

The supplier may propose mechanisms, materials and manufacturing processes, but it should not guess the brand's commercial strategy.

ODM also needs more validation. A new portable kitchen may require alpha prototypes, revised engineering samples, tooling trials, a pilot run, structural tests, use tests, packaging tests and compliance work for the exact configuration. Each gate is there to remove a different kind of risk. Skipping them may shorten the calendar on paper while moving the problem into mass production.

The Main ODM Risk: Unclear Ownership

A buyer may fund tooling without owning the underlying design. A supplier may contribute an existing platform while granting only limited territorial exclusivity. Jointly created drawings may be usable by both parties unless the contract says otherwise.

None of these arrangements is automatically unfair. What matters is that the commercial value matches the rights received.

Before paying development fees, agree in writing on:

  • Ownership of industrial design and engineering drawings

  • Ownership and physical location of tooling

  • Tool maintenance and replacement responsibility

  • Whether tooling can be used for other customers

  • Territory, channel, SKU and duration of any exclusivity

  • Rights to derivative products and future modules

  • Access to test reports and technical files

  • Treatment of background IP that existed before the project

  • What happens if the relationship ends

If these points cannot be explained in plain language, the project is not ready for an ODM purchase order.

The Hybrid Model Is Often the Commercially Strongest

Consumers do not care whether a portable kitchen was sourced through OEM, ODM or private label. They care whether it fits their vehicle, sets up easily, holds the right equipment, feels stable and is supported after the sale.

That is why many successful programs are hybrid.

A brand might use an existing wheeled storage base, create a custom side-table arrangement, select a market-specific induction module and add an exclusive accessory pack. The physical platform reduces engineering risk. The visible features create differentiation. Packaging and content explain the product in the brand's own voice.

The same approach can be applied across a range:

  • An entry SKU uses the standard base without an appliance.

  • A mid-range SKU adds a sink and preparation module.

  • A premium SKU includes an approved cooking configuration and storage accessories.

  • A later vehicle-specific product moves into ODM development.

Compare Total Commercial Commitment, Not Only Unit Price

The lowest quoted unit price is not necessarily the lowest-cost launch.

A useful internal calculation is:

True launch cost = development fees + tooling + samples + testing + packaging setup + opening inventory + freight and duty + spare parts + expected warranty cost

The relative weight of each item changes by sourcing model.

MOQ Is Usually Set by the Hardest Custom Input

Buyers often ask for “the product MOQ” as though it were one fixed number. In a customized program, the real MOQ may be determined by the least flexible input:

  • A custom powder-coating batch

  • Printed retail packaging

  • A molded plastic color

  • A unique extrusion

  • A custom textile order

  • A gas or electrical appliance sourced for one market

  • A dedicated hardware component

The finished-product assembly line may be able to build a small order, while one branded carton or color-matched component requires a larger purchase. A useful quotation separates the assembly MOQ from the MOQ and surplus exposure of each custom input.

Carton Volume Can Erase a Factory-Price Saving

Portable camping kitchens are not purchased by kilogram alone. They occupy space.

A lower-cost design with an awkward folded shape may reduce the number of units per pallet or container. A thicker foam pack can protect the product but increase dimensional freight. An accessory placed outside the main storage body can make the carton wider even though it adds little weight.

Before approving a custom design, compare:

  • Folded product dimensions

  • Final carton dimensions and gross weight

  • Units per pallet

  • Pallet height and overhang

  • Units per 20-foot and 40-foot container under the proposed loading method

  • Parcel-carrier dimensional limits for e-commerce

  • Carton drop and vibration performance

  • Ease of repacking after customer returns

Packaging is not a task to begin after the product is finished. It is part of product architecture.

Portable Camping Kitchen Decisions That Change the Sourcing Model

Some requirements appear small in a presentation but have a large effect on development scope.

1. Cooking Appliance Strategy

A stove-free base is mainly a structural and storage product. Adding a gas stove or induction cooker changes the technical and compliance questions.

Gas pressure, regulator type, connection, ventilation, clearances and permitted use vary by appliance and destination market. Electrical voltage, frequency, plug type, power rating, EMC and user instructions matter for induction products. A test report for one appliance does not automatically cover a visually similar substitute.

2. Work Height and User Experience

Standing cook stations, tailgate kitchens and low seated kitchens serve different customers. Changing height affects stability, chair compatibility, table geometry, setup behavior and product photography.

3. Water and Washing

A basin is not a complete water system. The brief must state whether clean water is gravity-fed or pumped, how gray water is collected, whether the tank travels inside the unit, which parts are removable for cleaning and what is actually included in the retail carton.

Adding a rechargeable pump introduces battery and charging questions. Adding a fixed tank changes restraint, leakage and cleaning requirements. These choices can move a project from light OEM customization into more involved development.

4. Vehicle Integration

“Fits SUVs” is not an engineering specification.

A removable kitchen box only needs a safe transport-restraint plan and a suitable cargo envelope. A vehicle-mounted slide-out system must also address anchor points, rear-door clearance, bumper interference, extension load, travel locks, road vibration and the vehicle's payload. Vehicle-specific ODM is justified when fitment is central to the customer promise.

5. Modular Compatibility

A single product can be customized relatively easily. A platform intended to accept future stoves, sinks, grills, tables and storage modules needs controlled interfaces. Dimensions, fasteners, load limits, clearances and naming rules must remain stable across future releases.

The development cost is higher, but the commercial return can be stronger because one base supports multiple SKUs, accessories and replacement parts.

Branding Does Not Transfer Product-Safety Responsibility

Private labeling changes the name on the product; it does not make product-safety obligations disappear.

The exact legal role of the brand, importer, distributor and manufacturer depends on the market, product and sales arrangement. In the European Union, the General Product Safety Regulation defines economic-operator responsibilities and includes traceability, safety information and technical-documentation requirements for covered consumer products. In Great Britain, businesses that make, import, distribute or sell consumer products have responsibilities under the applicable product-safety framework. In the United States, CPSC requirements depend on the product and applicable rule; importers of regulated general-use products may need a General Certificate of Conformity.

The practical sourcing rule is simpler:

Do not rely on a supplier's generic statement that the product is “certified.” Ask which document applies to which exact model, component supplier, bill of materials, destination market and production date.

A portable kitchen frame, gas appliance, induction cooker, rechargeable pump and food-contact work surface may each raise different questions. If the bundle changes, the documentation review must change with it.

Buyers should define before mass production:

  • Applicable regulations and standards by destination market

  • Party responsible for testing and certification costs

  • Required technical documentation

  • Product, carton and online-listing traceability information

  • Warning and instruction languages

  • Approved component list

  • Change-notification procedure

  • Retention period for records and test reports

  • Complaint, incident and corrective-action process

This is not work that should be assigned after the shipment has reached port.

Protect the Assets That Carry Long-Term Value

A product program creates more than finished goods. It creates drawings, molds, fixtures, test methods, packaging files, photography and operating knowledge. Each asset needs an owner and an access rule.

Exclusivity also needs boundaries. “Exclusive product” should identify the model, visible construction, market, sales channel, duration, minimum annual purchase and consequences if the volume is not reached. A vague promise is difficult to enforce and easy to misunderstand.

A Reliable Development Process for All Three Models

The number of iterations changes, but the same approval logic should apply to private label, OEM and ODM.

Gate 1: Commercial Brief

Define the user, channel, destination markets, target retail position, expected annual volume, launch window and non-negotiable functions.

Gate 2: Feasibility and Cost Architecture

Review the product concept, component availability, tooling, MOQ drivers, target factory price, packaging assumptions and compliance route before detailed work begins.

Gate 3: Specification and BOM Freeze

Create a controlled specification covering materials, dimensions, finish, components, accessories, packaging and claims. Record each revision.

Gate 4: Approval Sample

Evaluate the actual product in the intended use sequence: transport, setup, loading, cooking or preparation, cleaning, folding and repacking. Photographs alone are not enough.

Gate 5: Risk and Validation Plan

Agree on structural tests, cycle tests, stability checks, coating or corrosion evaluation, appliance-specific tests, packaging tests and market documentation.

Gate 6: Golden Sample and Pilot Run

Approve a production-intent reference sample. A pilot run checks whether the line can reproduce it, not merely whether the sample room can make one good unit.

Gate 7: Pre-Shipment Quality Control

Inspection should use the approved specification, golden sample, defect classification and sampling plan. Load and function tests need defined methods and acceptance criteria.

Gate 8: Change Control and After-Sales Feedback

No material, component or sub-supplier change should be silent. Returns, complaints and spare-part use should feed into the next production revision.

Start with the cost of being wrong.

If the largest risk is misjudging demand, choose private label or a highly constrained OEM trial. If the largest risk is looking identical to competitors, move toward OEM. If the customer promise cannot be delivered by an existing platform, ODM may be justified.

Eight Questions for the Internal Sourcing Meeting

  1. What evidence do we have that customers want this product?

  2. Which three features would make them choose us over an existing alternative?

  3. Can the business describe those features in measurable terms?

  4. What annual volume can we defend rather than hope for?

  5. How much non-recurring engineering and tooling can the gross margin repay?

  6. Who on our team will make product decisions within 48 hours when development is active?

  7. Which compliance and importer responsibilities will we carry in each market?

  8. What rights or exclusivity are essential to protect the investment?

If the first four answers are uncertain, starting with ODM is usually premature.

Four Common Sourcing Scenarios

Scenario 1: An E-Commerce Brand Entering the Category

The brand sells tents, chairs and storage products but has never sold a portable kitchen. It sees strong search interest and wants a product online before the next season.

Recommended route: Private label.

Select a production-ready kitchen, test samples, build a differentiated accessory bundle and invest in clear demonstration content. Use reviews, returns and customer-service questions to write the OEM brief for version two.

The mistake would be funding a new mold before knowing whether customers prefer gas, induction or a stove-free modular base.

Scenario 2: A National Outdoor Retailer Needs a Distinct Range

The retailer already knows its target price and has store staff who can demonstrate the product. Competitors sell similar folding cook stations, so a logo change is not enough.

Recommended route: OEM on a proven platform.

Customize the color, worktop, module combination, storage accessories, manual and retail packaging. Negotiate a defined channel or territory arrangement if the forecast supports it. Preserve proven hinges, load paths and major structural parts unless customer feedback justifies a change.

Scenario 3: A 4x4 Brand Wants a Vehicle-Integrated Kitchen

The product must fit a defined cargo platform, extend through the rear door, support a stove at full extension and remain quiet over rough roads.

Recommended route: ODM or tightly managed joint development.

The buyer should supply vehicle data, installation constraints, payload assumptions and operating requirements. The project needs prototype fit checks, extension-load testing, travel-lock validation, vibration evaluation and an installation specification. A generic “SUV compatible” private-label product would not support the claim.

Scenario 4: A Camping Brand Wants Gas and Induction Versions

The brand has a successful mechanical kitchen platform and wants separate SKUs for Europe and North America.

Recommended route: OEM platform strategy, not necessarily a completely new ODM product.

Keep the base, tables and storage common. Develop or select market-appropriate modules, plugs, power ratings, warnings and packaging. Where appliance compliance becomes too complex, supply the base without a fixed cooker and pair it locally with an approved appliance.

What to Send in a Useful RFQ

A supplier cannot quote a custom product accurately from a title and reference image. A useful RFQ should include:

  • Target countries and sales channels

  • Intended customer and use case

  • Target retail-price band

  • Expected first order and annual volume

  • Required launch date

  • Must-have, should-have and optional features

  • Preferred packed size and maximum product weight

  • Working-height and deployed-footprint targets

  • Storage and accessory requirements

  • Proposed stove, induction unit, grill or stove-free strategy

  • Water and gray-water requirements

  • Material and finish preferences

  • Branding locations and artwork status

  • Packaging format and e-commerce needs

  • Required test reports and compliance documents

  • Spare-parts and warranty expectations

  • Required exclusivity or IP terms

  • Delivery destination and preferred Incoterm

Ask the supplier to return more than one number. A useful proposal separates:

  • Standard unit price

  • Custom component cost

  • Development or engineering fee

  • Tooling and fixture cost

  • Sample cost

  • Testing and documentation cost

  • Packaging setup and printing cost

  • MOQ by finished product and custom component
