No open wood fire is completely smoke-free from ignition to shutdown. The quality of the fuel matters more than most product listings admit.
For wood burning, use short pieces of dry, seasoned hardwood that sit below the upper secondary-air ports. Wood with a moisture content below approximately 20% normally lights more easily and produces less smoke than damp or freshly cut material. Avoid filling the chamber so tightly that air cannot pass through the fuel bed.
